EMBURY UMC was named for Philip Embury, the "founder of American Methodism."

Embury began in 1856 as Independence Methodist Church, located at the corner of Independence and Ward Roads, just a short distance from the current location. It was in a building that housed a Masonic Lodge on the top and a school below which was used for church services on Sunday.

The photo to the left is one of the first views of the church at its current location on Locke Cuba Road. Note the two doors. The church had an eight foot high divider down the center and the men/boys entered through one door while the women/girls entered through the other.

Parts of this original church building are still a part of our current sanctuary.
